Phat Philly's is back. The popular former downtown restaurant has opened at 1305 S. Peoria Ave.

Phat Philly's operated for five years at 1101 S. Detroit Ave. before closing in 2010. That spot how is home to the Dog House.

Phat Philly's is known for its variety of Philly-style sandwiches, including the traditional combination of griddle-cooked strips of steak, sauteed onions and melted Cheez-Whiz.

The new restaurant will be open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday and, just as it used to be, 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. Friday-Saturday.

Phat Philly's has a small bar area with a selection of beers and a larger dining area than the old location.

It is in space that was Strings West, a guitar shop, for many years. It doesn't have an exterior sign yet; it's on the southeast corner of 13th Street and Peoria Avenue and has dedicated parking.

I drove by there the other day and noticed the place was packed but didn't know what was going on since there isn't a sign yet.
