Swingin' rock and rockabilly music act Cherry Poppin' Daddies headline Mayfest, 9:30 p.m. in downtown Tulsa on May 15. Tulsa's own Electric Rag Band will perform immediately prior.

The concert will is free and all ages.

The band celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2009 induction into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.

"I'd like to thank Angie DeVore-Green and Tom Green, owners of Dfest and Enso Bar-Lounge, for their assistance in booking the Cherry Poppin' Daddies," said Heather Pingry, Mayfest executive director.

Cherry Poppin' Daddies is actually an antiquated term used by African Americans often in what they then called "race records."

Motown producer Jerry Wexler, in an attempt to put a "more friendly" title to the popular cultural music, coined "rhythm and blues records," or R&B. Ta-dah! A genre is born.

The band's name may sound scandalous but it isn't. Daddies, as in DADDY-O. Dig it. The band blends jazz, ska, punk, rock, rockabilly, funk. Grab some historical context -- and a clue.

Thanks for the clue, Calvin. However, "Daddies" is not the problem part of this group's name. "Cherry-poppin'" is.

THE ENTIRE PHRASE IS ONE THAT, IN CONTEXT, IS ENTIRELY APPROPRIATE. LOOK IT UP. CALVIN IS CORRECT. IT'S A HISTORICAL REFERENCE. AND GUESS WHAT, A BAND USED IT *BECAUSE* IS SOUNDS CONTROVERSIAL. HAHA, DUPES.

No one has been duped. That the name was chosen because it was controversial is more than obvious. You might think gross and suggestive language is appropriate, but most people don't.

Cripes. It's only a band. Fercryinoutloud.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
