The Philadelphia Story -- you can't beat this romcom.
While this is the time of year when the must-see movies arrive in theaters, I've been having a lovely little film fest of my own at home.
It began this weekend with "The Philadelphia Story," which aired on Turner Classic Movies Saturday night.
I couldn't resist.I had not seen the classic romantic screwball comedy -- starring Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart -- in maybe 10 years.
It's a near-perfect movie that sets up the classic love triangle that has been copied unsuccessfully every year since 1940.
Then, in keeping with the theme, I DVR'ed several others this week including "Holiday," another Grant/Hepburn pairing, "The Shop Around the Corner" with Jimmy Stewart (and the inspiration for one of my favorite modern romcoms, "You've Got Mail,"), and then "My Favorite Wife," starring Grant and Irene Dunn.
Later in the week, the black-and-white marathon really gets going with multiple airings on various stations of "It's a Wonderful Life," and my all-time favorite Christmas movie, "Miracle on 34th Street."
Tonight starting at 7 p.m. on TCM, actress
Winona Ryder will guest host with Robert Osbborne, and she'll feature several of her favorite movies, including one of mine, "Born Yesterday." Ryder's lineup includes: The Front (1976), "Ball of Fire (1942), "Born Yesterday" (1950), and finally "A Face in the Crowd" (1957).
What are you favorite classic Christmas movies, or favorite black-and-white films?
