Classics on the big-screen: What do you want to see?

Any "Gone With the Wind" fans out there?

The Cinema at the Williams Center Forum showing the 1939 best-picture winner at Christmas is a cherished memory of several longtime Tulsans I've talked to about seeing classics on the big-screen rather than the small screen at home.

AMC Southroads 20 is taking requests for its "Fall Classics" series of movies. Through five previous incarnations and more than 60 movies, the series has never shown "Gone With the Wind" because so few prints still exist.

But with the series going digital for the first time, it will be easier for the AMC theater to show any movie. Even with the series beginning as soon as Sept. 30, that means your requests can still be heard.

According to management, no movies are yet confirmed for any of a dozen weeks.

AMC Southroads manager Jason Davis offered his email address - jdavis@amctheatres.com - for the public to make suggestions.

The AMC theater, 4923 E. 41st St., is one of only a handful of the national chain's movie houses presenting a program of classic movies. Each film in the fall lineup opens on a Friday and runs through the following Thursday.

The series has run movies from every decade up to the 1990s, but many of the most popular have been the oldest films, including sold-out showings of 1954's "White Christmas" this past December.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
