Aluminum Overcast, a WWII-era bomber.

The bombardier's seat in Aluminum Overcast.

A couple of years ago, I got on board the USS Lexington, a WWII-era aircraft carrier that is now a museum in Corpus Christi, Texas. The entire museum was pretty great, but I especially enjoyed the hangar deck, where I got a chance to get on one of the war planes they have on display. The whole experience just felt like stepping into history.

Which is why I'm excited to know that a restored WWII-era bomber will be in town later this month, and Tulsans will have the chance to get on board.

"Aluminum Overcast,” the Experimental Aircraft Association’s restored B-17 bomber, will be at Richard Lloyd Jones Jr. Airport June 29-July 1 as part of the association's 2012 “Salute to Veterans” national tour.

Ground tours of the bomber will be available for $10 per person or $20 per family. And if you've got an extra $400 or so on hand, you can also sign up for one of the flight “missions." Flight rates are $409-$475.

For more information or to book a flight, visit www.b17.org or call 800-359-6217.
