Yes, the whipped cream does start to melt in when it hits the hot chocolate. But who cares?

We have enjoyed a mild winter, but it is starting to get cold so I thought it might be time for a hot chocolate recipe.

This Malted Hot Chocolate is like the hot version of a chocolate malt and uses malt powder and some malted milk balls as garnish.

If you are especially cold, you might add a couple tablespoons of whiskey, brandy or rum to the mug for an adult version of this hot drink.

Three more recipes left in our chocolate countdown…

Malted Hot Chocolate
serves 8

8 cups milk
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup chocolate malt powder
4 ounces bittersweet chocolate , finely chopped
1. In saucepan, bring milk with sugar just to boil over medium-high heat, stirring often.
2. Remove from heat.
3. Whisk in malt powder and chopped chocolate until smooth.

Options: top with whipped cream and chopped malted milk balls.
Make-ahead: Let cool. Refrigerate in airtight container for up to 2 days; reheat.
