Contest: Win a "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" backpack

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island"

The sequel to the 2008 picture "Journey to the Center of the Earth" proved even more popular than its predecessor this past weekend, as "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" made more than $27 million at the box-office.

If you are one of those who checked into the island adventure, now playing in 3-D and in IMAX, you may have an advantage in answering a trivia question about the movie.

Why would you want to do that? To win a prize, of course.

Here's the deal: I have a promotional backpack from "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," but that's not all. Win the backpack, and you win what's inside, too: a copy of Jules Verne's book, "The Mysterious Island"; a field journal; a water bottle; and a "Journey 2" T-shirt.

Here's the set-up for the question: In the movie, Sean (the boy played by Josh Hutcherson) proposes that the map he has will lead to an island that was not only the inspiration for Verne's "Mysterious Island," but two other famed works of literature.

Question: Name the two other books that Sean believes were inspired by the island that he and his stepfather visit.

A random winner will be selected from among the correct answers submitted to this blog before 3 p.m. Tuesday. Good luck!

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
