It's worth noting that "Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience" has tanked, with a $12.5 million opening weekend and a second weekend that dropped a staggering 77 percent to $2.8 million.

It's worth noting because "Coraline," the deliciously spooky stop-motion 3-D film based on Neil Gaiman's popular book, is in its seventh week doing better than "Jonas Brothers" and is now taking back some of the 3-D screenings that had been given over to the Disney Channel boys.

This is significant: "Coraline" marks the first time that a film made in 3-D has made way for another film in 3-D ("Coraline" was available only in 2-D in recent weeks), and then later returned to the 3-D screens.

"Coraline" is my favorite new release of 2009. I recommend it highly to those who haven't seen this tale of a brave, adventurous girl, to those who only caught it in 2-D, and to those enjoying their spring break.

See it in 3-D at AMC Southroads 20, Cinemark Tulsa and Starworld 20 currently, but keep checking our movie listings for changes. Check out this 2-D trailer, and imagine what "Coraline" looks like with an added dimension.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
