Cortner's memories

I have a note coming out in next week's spot that Cortner's Restaurant at 603 S. Sheridan Road has closed.

Pat and Cecil Cortner and son Ron opened the diner on April 1, 1965, and, thankfully, it remained locked in time for almost 44 years.

Former customers and employees no doubt have many fond memories of the diner, from the wall jukeboxes at each booth to the multicolored light fixtures and old cash register.

If you have a memory to share, feel free to submit your comment.

My husband and I have been faithful customers of Cortner's for over 20 years. We are crushed that such a landmark and family favorite will no longer be around. We will miss it, especially the coffee! (Which I tried to reproduce at home with no success)

Pat Cortner is my mother's sister. I worked at Cortner's and the Family Tree in the 1970's when I was a teenager. My favorite memories of Cortner's is when we met there for family breakfasts. We always had to have the big booth for all the family, and it's a good thing we all love each other, because it was pretty close. I'll always have a special place in my heart for Cortner's restaurant - my Uncle Cecil's and my Aunt's place.

My Dad and Mom opened Cortner's in 1965 while all of us children, including Ron, were teenagers. My sister and I were there the first days the doors opened, me as a carhop! I was only 13, Ron 14, Debbie 15 and Eddy 17 and we were all in school. We worked after school, on weekends, and full-time in summer. I have many memories of our family restaurant and am devastated that it is gone, as is my Mom! I worked there many years off and on,sometimes without pay, skipping college classes to help out because the help didn't show. I helped run the business when my Dad got sick. It was a family endeavor in which each one of us children contributed at one time or another.

My memories are of all the wonderful customers that we had over the years. When Daddy's health was bad one customer even loaned us a Van so that Daddy could go to his brothers funeral in St Joe, MO. I didn't work there after I married and moved away, except for helping out on weekends when daddy was ill. Even recently when I came to town I would always see faces that I knew 36 years ago. I will always remember Daddy sitting on a bar stool talking about events and laughing with customers, his eyes always smiling, and my Mother's biscuits and gravy. I am very sad to see it close!

WHERE do I start?

My sister & I ate every Sat without fail. Cortner's became our home on Sat. We always brought our newspaper game page in with us and worked it while waiting for our meal. And the food! Cortner's was THE BEST for wonderful homemade biscuits and gravy, fluffy pancakes & waffles and they always cooked my egg just the way I liked it..over hard. The staff was just like family! The warm, homey atmosphere was like eating breakfast in Mom's kitchen!

In fact a friend and I were going to eat there on 4-23. She too became a fan of that wonderful food and I know she'll be as devastated as I am to hear it's closed.

May God richly bless the Cortner family. I will miss Cortner's SO MUCH.
