Miranda and Phil Kaiser, owners of Cosmo restaurant in Brookside, will open a Middle Eastern-Mediterranean restaurant this fall in the Brady District.
The restaurant, to be called Laffa -- Medi-Eastern Restaurant & Bar, will be located at 111 N. Main St., on the northeast corner of Main and Archer streets. It will be in the same building as the new Fairfield Inn & Suites but won't be part of the hotel. Laffa will have its own entrance, Kaiser said.
"We will have plenty of mezze (appetizers) and a few entrees, largely vegetarian but with some meat dishes, too," Phil Kaiser said. "The food will be Middle Eastern, but we won't do the Arabic music and hookah thing. The atmosphere will be similar in style to Cosmo."
Kaiser said the restaurant also will feature walk-up falafel stands that will have late-night hours.
Kaiser said the inspiration for the restaurant stems from his and Miranda's years living in Israel.
"I lived there 17 years, and I think Miranda was there about 15 years, so, yes, that was a major influence for this restaurant," Kaiser said.
Kaiser said laffa is a type of bread used all over the Middle East.
"It's similar to naan, and it's made in a special oven that looks like a cement mixer," he said.
Kaiser said Laffa will be open for lunch and dinner at first and eventually will add breakfast.
He said he received custody of the space only a couple of weeks ago and now "it's full steam ahead."
"We are planning an October or November opening," he said. "That's about the same time some of the other Brady District projects should be finished, too, and I would like to see a lot of the dust settled by the time we open."
