I'm not sure how we let this one slide past us, but it has come to my attention that it was American Craft Beer Week two or three weeks ago. Along with this came some interesting numbers, provided by Kansas City-based Boulevard Brewing Co.
1. In the late 19th century, America was home to some 4,000 breweries, most small, independent businesses making a wide variety of beers. By the late 1970s, only 1 percent remained, with just one style of beer to be found.
2. As of April 10, 2010, there were 1,558 craft breweries in the United States, including: 981 brewpubs, 509 microbreweries and 68 regional craft breweries.
3. In 2009, craft brewers sold an estimated 9,115,635 barrels of beer, up from 8,501,713 in 2008.
Soooo, everyone join in: "99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer..."
