In
an interview with Access Hollywood, Benedict Cumberbatch made a pretty definitive statement about his role as the villain in the upcoming “Star Trek Into Darkness”: It isn’t going to be Khan.
“I play a character called John and not that other name,” Benedict told Access Hollywood, referring to questions about whether he was playing Star Trek fan favorite Khan Noonien Singh. “It’s interesting. Speculation is speculation and that’s all fun.”
Paramount Pictures released
the first photo from the movie earlier this week, revealing Cumberbatch’s character was named John Harrison. That didn’t quell speculation about whether the character was actually Khan or Gary Mitchell from the second pilot to the original series.
Cumberbatch’s statement in the interview seemed rather definitive, though.
“I play John Harrison who’s a terrorist and an extraordinary character in his own right,” Cumberbatch said. “He’s somebody who is not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain. He’s got an extraordinary purpose, and I hope that at one point or other in the film you might even sympathize with the reasons he’s doing what he’s doing — not necessarily the means and the destruction he causes.”
So, it looks like we may be in for a new story featuring a new villain played by the “Sherlock” star, who was in Oklahoma recently to film “August: Osage County.” Of course, even this statement isn’t likely to quell speculation that Khan or Mitchell will appear in some way.
“Star Trek Into Darkness” opens May 17, 2013.
