DC Comics has come under fire for hiring Ender's Game author Orson Scott Card to write a digital Superman comic because of Card's views on homosexuality and marriage equality.
A petition was posted on the website AllOut.org protesting the move. It reads:
OUTRAGE: DC Comics has just hired anti-gay writer Orson Scott Card for their new digital Adventures of Superman.
He's written publicly that he believes marriage equality would lead to the end of civilization. He's also on the board of a notorious anti-equality organization.
We need to let DC Comics know they can't support Orson Scott Card or his work to keep LGBT people as second-class citizens. They know they're accountable to their fans, so if enough of us speak out now, they'll hear us loud and clear. Sign and share!
In an interview with Salon.com in 2000, Card, a Mormon, voiced his opposition to gay marriage, saying "I find the comparison between civil rights based on race and supposed new rights being granted for what amounts to deviant behavior to be really kind of ridiculous." In 2009, he joined the National Organization for Marriage, a group that works against same-sex marriage. Card has also said attacked those who campaign for gay rights in an essay in 1990 title "The Hypocrites of Homosexuality.
DC Comics has been supportive of the LGBT community in the past, most recently introducing a gay Green Lantern in its "Earth 2" comic.
Card's hiring was announced Feb. 6, and the online petition was up last week seeking 5,000 signatures. As off Tuesday afternoon, it had surpassed 6,100, and the petitioners had revised their goal to 10,000.
