PEOPLE magazine reports actor
Larry Hagman, best known as "J.R. Ewing" on the show "Dallas" and his role on "I Dream of Jeannie" has died.
Hagman's family told the
Dallas Morning News the star was "surrounded by loved ones" when he passed away Friday due to complications from throat cancer. He was 81.
"It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for. The family requests privacy at this time," the family said in a statement.
Late last year, Hagman announced he'd signed on to star in a TNT reprise of "Dallas," but also that he had stage 2 throat cancer, PEOPLE reports.
The primetime soap opera originally aired on CBS from 1978 to 1991.
Beginning in 1965, Hagman, a native of Texas, costarred with Barbara Eden as the astronaut Major Anthony Nelson on "I Dream of Jeannie" - its original airing on NBC for five seasons.
Said Eden on her Faceboook page about her former costar:
"I can honestly say that we've lost not just a great actor, not just a television icon, but an element of pure Americana ... Goodbye Larry, there was no one like you before and there will never be anyone like you again."
