Michael Sager predicts the new S&J Seafood Cafe & Oyster Bar might open in early August. Tulsa World file

Michael Sager, who owns a number of properties in the Blue Dome District, said Tuesday night that he expects to see a much different style of restaurant developed in the current Blue Dome Diner space.

"I'm going to take off part of the face of the building to create a covered outdoor dining space," Sager said. "We will do some cool stuff."

It previously was announced the Blue Dome Diner, 313 E. Second St., will close July 29. Its lease was not renewed.

Since then rumors have swirled that some heavy hitters are interested in taking over the space.

"Absolutely, that's true," Sager said. "I can't say who yet, but the interest has been unbelievable."

Sager also said don't be surprised to see another Blue Dome Diner emerge some day.

"I own the name Blue Dome Diner, and I will open one in the future," Sager said. "It will be small and eclectic, with different operators and in a different place, but it still will be in the Blue Dome District."

Meantime, Sager said he expects the new S&J Seafood Cafe & Oyster Bar to open soon at 320 E. First St.

"It's near to getting the interior paint job done," Sager said. "The kitchen is installed, the walkins and fixtures are all in. I think it has a chance to open in early August."

S&J Oyster operated in various locations from 1983 to 2004. Founder Howard Smith has been serving as a consultant to the new ownership group, headed by Bill Parkey.

Sager is developing First Street Lofts above the restaurant and a liquor store, Whiskey Business, that occupy the ground floor.

The last time I went to S&J Oyster Bar, will be my last time to go to S&J Oyster Bar...Overpriced, poorly prepared, and tiny portions.

And the waitress kept telling me I was wrong about having eaten at the Yale S&J, across from LaFortune Park, in the early 1980's...Great way to insure a tip, keep telling the customer that they don't know what they are talking about!!!!

I ate at the Yale location and am surprised the waitress would be insistent it never existed. I agreed, S&J went downhill. We went to the Peoria location once and never went back.
Having said that, Howard Smith is a seasoned restauranteur. He's opened a number of dining spots over the years:
Pablo's, Ma Bell's, J.P. Souza's, Bianca's, Rhode Island Red's, and had four S&J's going at one point. His last effort, as I recall, was Da' Boat, at 81st & Lewis.
I'll wait and see about this new one.

That was then, this is now, DomoArrigato. When S & J opens again, give it one more try. I ate at the one on Brookside one time, it was okay, but I'm not into oysters or seafood of any kind, yuck.

I used to go S&J's when it was located in Brookside. I always went when they were having what they called "OysterRama". [I think I spelled it like they did] If my memory serves me right, you could get a dozen oysters on the half shell for less than $2.00...Its been a long time ago.

Maybe they will bring it back with lower prices for a week or so.

Sure was a long time ago! A dozen on the half-shell at White River Fish Market or Kilkennys is thirteen bucks now.

Seems like it was around 1985 or 86.

I don't care what Michael Sager puts in the location where the current Blue Dome Diner resides. His treatment of the ONLY Blue Dome Diner was despicable and obviously motivated by pure greed. Blue Dome Diner's TRUE customers will follow them, regardless of the name of their successor endeavor. Another Blue Dome Diner (since Michael Sager says he owns the rights to the name) will never be the same.
