The "Up" series of films by Michael Apted.

Film director Michael Apted will take part in a Skype session Friday night at Circle Cinema, answering audience questions about his acclaimed "Up" series of films.

"56 Up," the latest in a series of documentaries that began in 1964 and have found Apted revisiting the same group of British men and women every seven years since they were 7 years old, begins showing at Circle Cinema, 10 S. Lewis Ave., on Friday.

Apted will speak with the Circle audience via Skype following a 6 p.m. Friday screening of the film, in which he examines the progression of the people's lives now that they are 56 years old.

The opportunity to see what Neil, Suzy, Tony, Nick and the others have been up to since "49 Up" continues with multiple screenings.

Showtimes are available online at tulsaworld.com/circle. The film is not rated and has a running time of 2 hours, 19 minutes.

The British-born Apted, who turns 72 on Sunday, has alternated his "Up" films — a series regarded by film critic Roger Ebert as one of his top-10 motion picture experiences — with directing feature films in Hollywood for the past 30 years.

Apted's other films include Oscar-nominated pictures such as "Coal Miner's Daughter," "Gorillas in the Mist" and "Nell," as well as blockbusters including the James Bond film "The World Is Not Enough" and "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader."

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
