Director of "Star Wars VII": J.J. Abrams

J.J. Abrams

Kathleen Kennedy

Are you a "Star Trek" person or "Star Wars" person? Apparently J.J. Abrams is both.

Reports are rampant that the creator of "Lost" and the man who successfully brought the "Star Trek" movie franchise back to life is the choice to make the first new "Star Wars" movie in a decade.

A new edition, known so far as "Star Wars VII," is reportedly due for 2015. Abrams' next movie is "Star Trek Into Darkness" due May 17.

The selection of Abrams has always made sense -- if not for Abrams recently saying that he wasn't in contention for the job -- because of the Hollywood connections.

Kathleen Kennedy is producing the new "Star Wars" films. Kennedy has been producing Steven Spielberg movies since "E.T." all the way up to "Lincoln." Spielberg served as producer on "Super 8," which was directed by Abrams and which Spielberg basically gave his blessing to as the kind of film that he used to make.

You know, the kind of movie that Spielberg used to make back in the 1980s, when he was a younger man. Younger like Abrams is now, but back in the glory years of the "Star Wars" franchise.

Does that mean we can expect a "Star Wars" movie more like "Star Wars" through "Return of the Jedi" (episodes 4-6, which opened in 1977, 1980 and 1983)?

Is Abrams our "New Hope" for the series? Stay tuned for developments.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
