While Harry Potter was filling the multiplexes last weekend, "The Hangover" was making $8 million in its seventh weekend and breaking one of the longest-held box-office records.
"The Hangover," now at more than $236 million, is the highest-grossing R-rated comedy ever, passing 1984's "Beverly Hills Cop," which took in $234.8 million.
It seems remarkable that any such record could stand for a quarter-century, especially considering the rate of inflation during that time.
Which of course brings up the not-so-small matter of number of tickets sold, and in that regard, "Beverly Hills Cop" trounces "The Hangover" (a picture in which Warner Bros. had so much confidence, the studio green-lit a sequel even before its June 5 opening).
This year's average ticket price is $7.18, while in 1984, the average ticket price was $3.36. The result: "Beverly Hills Cop," if selling tickets at 2009 prices, would have grossed $482.1 million.
