A former speech writer for President George W. Bush has written a tell-all about his former boss. Matt Latimer writes in the book, “Speech-less: Tales of a White House Survivor,” that, among other things, Bush said then-candidate Barack Obama “has no clue.”
Latimer's revelation elicited a response from an unlikely ally. James Carville, Democratic political strategist and former adviser to President Bill Clinton, called Latimer a “dweeb” and a “punk” for revealing things said in confidence by his boss.
Of course, we all say things among close friends that we wouldn’t want made public. Bush is no different and should not be judged harshly for his comments. And Bush certainly has made worse off-the-cuff comments that he thought were safe. Remember candidate Bush's stage whisper about a New York Times reporter? That one, like Obama's comment about rapper Kayne West ("he's a jackass") was caught on tape.
As for Latimer, I agree with Carville.
