David Bradley, Jessica Raine, and Brian Cox will star in a new drama based on the creation of "Doctor Who." (AP) And not just any ol' special! The BBC announced on their "Doctor Who" blog on Tuesday that they plan to premier a new drama called " An Adventure in Space and Time," based on the creation of the iconic and long running television program some time this year as part of the show's 50th anniversary celebration.
The special will feature David Bradley, who you may remember as Mr. Filch in the "Harry Potter" movies portraying William Hartnell, who in turn portrayed the first incarnation of The Doctor when the series premiered back in November of 1963(causing a Russian doll like meta-vortex that will surely destroy civilization).
Also cast is the always awesome Brian Cox from "The Bourne Supremacy" and "X2" as Sydney Newman, BBC’s then-Head of Drama, and a spate of other highly thought of British actors.
This 50th anniversary is quite a big deal. We're getting the second half of season 7 in April, an actual series special(rumored to feature multiple doctors), Series 8 will presumably start in the fall, we should get a 2013 Christmas special, the British mail is issuing a set of Who themed postage stamps, and New Zealand is even putting all of the Doctors and the TARDIS on their money. I also assume that etsy will explode with scarves and fezzes and bow-ties as well.
