Does your bank charge for debit card purchases? It may soon ...

A can of coffee -- or can of money? Hmm ...

From what I vaguely remember Dad saying, my great-grandfather may have buried money in the back yard, perhaps in coffee cans, decades ago.

Maybe that was because he lived through the Depression. Whatever his reason, that story was the first thing that flashed through my crazy head upon hearing that my bank, Bank of America, will start charging $5 a month for debit card purchases at the beginning of 2012, whether you swipe the thing once every 30 days or, like me, multiple times daily.

Once my mind raced from coffee cans to my debit card (which is another story altogether, remind me to tell you some time), I was slightly miffed. I mean, throughout my 20s, I probably paid Bank of America more than $1,000 in overdraft fees when I failed to keep up with my transactions. So now I'm having to give them even more money?

Of course, those overdrafts were MY fault (even though it seems they'd let a massive check go through first, THEN let all the piddling transactions go through after, which led to those fees -- but I digress). The more I thought about it, I guess $5 a month isn't that bad. Heck, that's a frozen coffee treat at Starbucks. Plus, banks have to make money, too, right?

Earlier this week, someone said that only about 40 percent of banks offer free checking these days. So my free checking account probably won't stay that way for much longer.

What do you think about all this? Feel free to comment (just don't use expletives, if you can helpt it).

Peace, love and coffee cans ... XOXO

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
