Doughnut Day

from Merritt's

Merritt’s bakery is once again teaming up with the Salvation Army for National Doughnut Day.

Visit one of the stores Friday and get a FREE doughnut with drink purchase while supplies last.

Doughnuts will include all varieties regularly priced at $.75

Salvation Army kettles will be at all Merritt's locations on Friday for donations that will benefit The Center of Hope. The center is located downtown and is open 365 days a year for three meals a day and overnight shelter. They have a men's dorm which has 94 beds in it and not a single one has been empty in over 20 years.

According to Merritt’s web site...
The Salvation Army's connection with doughnuts started in 1917 when a Salvation Army lassie, Helen Purviance, and fellow officer Ensign Margaret Sheldon used a small frying pan, simple dough and wine bottles as a rolling pin to make crullers to feed to the homesick boys on the front lines in France during WWI. The fresh aroma drew a long line of soldiers to their tent and soon they were serving 9,000 doughnuts a day, along with the other "lassies" in the trenches. The Salvation Army lassies quickly became known as "doughnut girls" and the simple doughnut became a symbol of all that the Salvation Army was doing to ease the hardships of the frontline fighting man.

While at Merritt’s, you can also try the new Key Lime Macaron
A macaron is an almond meringue cookie with a gooey filling. Merritt’s already sells lemon, raspberry and
chocolate and they have brought back the caramel macaron.

I've never heard of a macaron, only macaroons. But sound delicious, I'll have to make a visit to Merritt's on Friday for a coffee, free donut and some macarons. :)

Macarons are french pastries made with meringue and filled with some sort of spread or icing. They're delish!
