Doughnuts from the OK Country Donut Shoppe.
First we told you about the cupcake. Then we told you pie was the new cupcake. The latest was that the doughnut was the new cupcake.
In March, Kim Brown wrote about the doughnut trend and, in particular, about a doughnut shop that's one of the hottest spots in town: OK Country Donut Shoppe, 8048 S. Yale Ave. On Saturday mornings, the line is out the door at this unassuming shop where the owner makes doughnuts in the shapes of the alphabet, flowers and animals. Kids go crazy for them.
Doughnut shops in L.A. and New York City are taking a more sophisticated turn, using high-end ingredients and specialty flavors (think lavender, rose hips, tangerine) to make premium doughnuts.
One of the hottest doughnut shops in the country is near Los Angeles in Glendora where "the Donut Man," Jim Nakano makes strawberry doughnuts. He slices a yeast doughnut and fills it with glazed strawberries.
It's actually something you could make at home. Or, buy some cream-filled doughnuts, slice down the middle and stuff with strawberries. Imagine everyone coming into the kitchen and finding a platter of those doughnuts, with hot coffee and chocolate milk. You would be loved.
