Drugs! Drugs! Drugs!

OK, I know this is random but (hi, by the way -- long time, no read) I thought this story from CNN.com was interesting. And I wondered if y'all had any comments to make.
Here's the gist (or, because I'm somewhat lazy so close to 5 p.m., the first sentence of the story): "If Craig Blair gets his way, anyone filing for unemployment or food stamps must show that they are drug-free. He's a state lawmaker in West Virginia who has introduced a bill to require random drug testing for benefits and lays out his case on a Web site called notwithmytaxdollars.com." (see the full story at http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/03/31/jobless.benefits/index.html?iref=mpstoryview)
So what do y'all think? Let's weigh in -- or, because that makes me think of scales, let's just trade opinions. If you're not busy, that is.
Peace, love and specimen cups ... xoxo

I think that this is ALREADY criminalizing people or. It tells me that if you need public assistance then you are inclined to use illicit drugs. 99% of people who get public assistance of any kind do not do illegal drugs. It is the Republicans way of labelling everyone, so they can legislate directly at them. Taking away our rights is not a way to deter drug use. Showing people the after-effects of drugs is the best deterrant in my opinion. Lets randomly test EVERYONE. We all get assistance from the government in one form or another. When Bush gave us the stimulus payment last year did any of you repubs give it back or how about taking a drug test first to determine if you were worthy?????

Urine testing is easy to beat and hair testing would cost more than the public assistance they are applying for so what would be the point?

I think it is a radical waste of tax dollars..if they are unemployeed they most likely had held a job where they may have been tested as a part of the employeement process. By the way, I am sure most applicants are more concerned with keeping a roof over their head and food on the table...esspecially if they have children...

Yes let's discuss do we think people who rely on money we provide(as taxpayers) should be drug tested hell yes! I was on public assistance and was drug tested regularly for my job. Do we want the meth to stop? TEST the folks getting welfare, food stamps,TANF and the like. If you are using illegal street drugs you don't need money you need help.

Living Wright
While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
