Election morning 2008 was a beautiful, calm morning in Tulsa, and I enjoyed the trip to the polls with my wife. The leaves on the maple trees across 15th Street from Maple Park were firey orange.
On the way, I told her that if I were to fall over in an apparent heart attack before we got there, she was to drag me into the church before calling for an ambulance. She said I was to do the same, but we got there just fine.
We stood in line about 20 minutes at First United Methodist Church this morning. I put ballots No. 135 and 136 (one for the city streets election, one for everything else) in the machine.
I figure I voted mostly for winners, and a few losers that I'll be proud to have supported.
My mother used to say that she had never voted for a presidential candidate who won in Oklahoma. Up until today that's been true of me too, including primary voting, but it hasn't slowed me or mom (now in Tennessee and still swimming upstream on election day).
We'll see later on tonight if my family tradition of voting against the majority of the state lives on.
I was a little irked to see the voting people asking for IDs from the folks ahead of me in line. I was ready to give them an earful on the topic, and then, they didn't card me. I guess I was putting off an aura of being who I said I was.
