End of year surveys ...

Yeah, I keep getting these "end of year" pass-around emails. You know the ones. So, this year, I thought I'd actually take the time to fill one out, and post it here to share. Feel free to reply with your answers, too!

(Thanks, Toniferous, for this one.)

QUIZ:

1.) a. What band(s) or album(s) did you fall in love with this year?
Watermelon Slim, JFJO (again), Black Gasoline, El Paso Hot Button, Starkweather Boys, Boxcar Satan, Cannonball Jane, Eric B. and Rakim (again), Callupsie ... And the White Stripes' new album. And the re-release of Led Zep's "The Song Remains the Same." And John Lee Hooker (again). And Bloc Party. Yes, I said Bloc Party.

b. What bands did you fall out of love with?
Meh, Pittsburgh Slim. Dude, that Abercrombie-wearing rapper-wannabe poseur is nothing if not terrible. And Daft Punk. Its "Alive" CD is, well, mediocre. The Doors. Snow Patrol. The Killers, kinda. The Vines, kinda. Quite a few things, actually, but I don't dwell on those.

2.) What local bands (if any) have rocked your socks this year?
Black Swan, EtLO, Congrats!, Here is There, Starkweather Boys, Bring Down the Hammer, T.J. McFarland, 1 GOP, Crooked X, Callupsie, PDA, Playya 1000, Dull Drums, Doldrums, seriously, there are many.

3.) Any specific concerts or house party shows of note in 2007?
Indeed, mostly local and regional acts ... EPHB, Hickoids, Unwed Sailor, the Great Collapse, Black Swan, Junior Brown, Starkweather Boys, EtLO, Callupsie, Winghead, Wighead, Wakarusa, Dfest, Flaming Lips, Zappa, that Shutdown Sequence Go! show at the park, Ghosts at Dfest, again, there are soooo many.

4.) Did you end up flip-flopping on anything musical this year?
I realized that I really like quite a bit of country music. Josh Turner. And that Reba Duets album. I know, you're saying, "JENNIFER! I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU ANYMORE!!" True dat, yo. Now, let me reintroduce myself ... Howdy!

And, slightly off-topic side note, I always believed, "You know, Elvis capitalized off black music and artists to become famous. Carl Perkins, etc. will always be more 'legit.' " Well, Elvis also helped to introduce a very important genre to the masses, in a very, very big way. I recently heard a collection of 100+ "Elvis songs," performed by the original artists. The originals are better, yes, but without the help of the E, I admittedly would have never known they existed.

5.) Musically, was anything a complete disappointment in the last 12 months?
That Pittsburgh Slim CD. Holy cats, that was awful. I think it tainted my CD player -- thank goodness I didn't upload it to my iPod!

6.) Did you come to any realizations or have any epiphanies about music or any such music related hoopla?
I realized that I will never, ever tire of "newer classics" like Beck. Or Public Enemy. Or of learning about music. Or of listening to it, for that matter. Or of writing in incomplete sentences.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
