Enough Hussein, already
I've been absent from the blogosphere for awhile, but I'm trying to get back into the swing of things.
A few things have ticked me off lately. Here's one of them.
Can we drop the innuendos in the presidential campaign? OK, I know that answer and it is "no." Innuendos have been a part of politics forever.
I am, however, awfully tired of hearing and reading about Barack "Hussein" Obama. I also am weary of the charge that he is a Muslim.
I don't care if you support him politically or not. You can vote for Ron Paul or Ralph Nader as far as I care.
This character-bashing movement has a different sort of ring to it than, say, the character-bashing of former presidential candidate John Kerry by the Swift Boaters. What was learned from that, again, is that unfounded and untrue attacks work. Again, such attacks are nothing new to American politics. But the Internet passes such accusations along faster and gives them an air of truth. (And, yes, I see the irony in that statement.)
The "Hussein" ploy is an attempt to link him somehow to (ooooh) Middle Easterners, and (oooooooh) maybe terrorists. You know, like, Saddam Hussein who was supposed to be a terrorist with weapons of mass destruction but turned out to be just another despot and bully with a paper army.
Of course, with that name goes the story that he is secretly a Muslim. No, he's a Christian. You should know that by now, given all the unnecessary attention to his preacher.
You can dislike Obama for his political positions. You can dislike him because of the way he dresses or talks.
But at least be honest in your dislike. C'mon say what you mean. Or is that simply too difficult or risky.
