F is for....

Film, fun, food and foolishness, all of which you can find aplenty in Oklahoma, or at least I know I have, along with friends, funky finds and football.

These are a few of my favorite things, and I intend to start using the F-words more frequently in this space.

F is for foolishness: I just love that state Legislature agenda, finding room to select the state rock song amongst all the other priorities. Considering their works this session, song candidates should include "You Dropped an Ultrasound on Me" and "Never Been to Spain" (but if I go, I'll only speak my official language of English).

F is for football: I watched the NFL Draft last weekend. Not an hour. Not the crawl noting the picks. I watched for hours. You could say I'm a fan: I still have videotapes of the first round of picks from, I believe, 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993. All good years for my Dallas Cowboys. Those tapes are keepers until the images simply vanish from view, Mel Kiper's hairdos but a distant memory.

F is for Felix: As in Felix Jones, the Arkansas Razorback by way of Tulsa's Booker T. Washington tailback who's going to play for Dallas, the team he rooted for growing up here. I knew I liked that guy. I think he's going to be a fantastic addition, and most agree, considering his speed, kick return skills and that with Marion Barber he can do the sharing thing he practiced with Darren McFadden. For those who criticize that he's not a 300-plus carry a year guy if needed, it's true he didn't even have to perform that way for Booker T., gaining 2,000-plus yards in 2004 on better than 11 yards a carry average. Let's see what happens.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
