Faking a phone call, Girl Scout gelato and violin-flavored vanilla

I ordered the Samoa gelato, seen here in the upper left corner of this horrible iPhone shot I took. My hands were shaking with anticipation, sorry.

Get thee behind me, Samoa!

I almost made it through Girl Scout cookie season unscathed.

No one directly asked me to buy a box, which was quite convenient. But I still feel a bit guilty for pretending to talk on my cell phone outside the Walmart Neighborhood Grocery when little girls would scream "Wanna buy some Girl Scout cookies?!?!" at me as I entered. Seriously, couldn't they see I was on the phone? I even went as far as having a fake conversation about someone in the hospital, sheesh.

Anyhoo, it was a small accomplishment on my part, having not done so well on Weight Watchers recently. But it was an accomplishment, nonetheless!

But that was before I had 30 minutes to kill this week before a photo shoot downtown. I popped into Mod's Coffee & Crepes at 507 S. Boston Ave., thinking I might have a Diet Coke or something innocuous.

Who or whom was I kidding? Their much-gabbed-about gelato was displayed near the entrance, a tasty little rainbow of colors -- one of which bore the chocolate flecks of a Girl Scout Samoa cookie, with whole cookies scattered on top. That's right, these evil people had created a freakin' Samoa gelato.

Obviously, I caved and ordered a large -- half Samoa, half some other Italian vanilla flavor I can't pronounce but kept calling it Stradivarius. Whatever. It was absolutely fantastic! It even had a whole Samoa cookie buried inside. Insert moaning sound ... right ... HERE.

In a virtual culinary afterglow, I sauntered outside and sat at one of the sidewalk tables, looking up at the buildings, pretending I was on vacation for a few minutes before having to head off on assignment. Sigh ... It was a lovely afternoon.

If you haven't been by Mod's, stop what you're doing and go -- now. They serve breakfast, which I've put on my spring itinerary. And I hear their crepes are out-of-this-world awesome.

But take my word for it: The Stradivarius vanilla and Samoa gelato is mahvelous with a capitol Mmmm ...

Peace, love and gelato afterglow ... XOXO

After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998.
