Fattiest food in Oklahoma

Health.com released its list of the 50 fattiest foods in the United States. For Oklahoma, it's chicken-fried steak.

Fine. We'll take that honor with pride. Many of us can make a mean chicken-fried steak at home. Even more of us know where we can buy one. Hello, Nelson's. And Shiloh's. Just to name a couple.

Some other states' fattiest foods don't sound half as good as ours. Take Alaska's eskimo ice cream, a concoction of reindeer fat, seal oil, salmonberries and blackberries. Or, Indiana's fried brain sandwich.

We'll stick with our chicken-fried steak.

This is a cruel turn of the screw. Everyone knows that Threadgill's in Austin makes THE BEST CHICKEN-FRIED STEAK IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE, and somehow Texas is relegated to being represented by the humble corn dog. What a grave injustice. Also, deep-fried bacon was introduced at the Texas State Fair to rave reviews by consumers and cardiovascular surgeons alike.

Makes me so proud. Think I'll go to Nelson's for lunch.

When the opportunity to become the food writer at the Tulsa World presented itself in the summer of 2011, Nicole jumped at it. She is excited to explore a new side of Tulsa and make the transition from crime to cuisine. .
