Former Dallas Cowboy Everson Walls was a good guy a long time ago

This story has nothing to do with restaurants or food, except for the fact that my father once had a memorable breakfast with former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro Everson Walls and his family.

I am reminded of this because Walls was in the news today. In a Tulsa World story about the death of Ron Springs, a former teammate of Walls, it was noted that a few years ago Walls donated a kidney for a transplant to his good friend.

My dad's story happened in the mid to late 1980s, after he had retired from Southwestern Bell and the U.S. Army Reserve. As a grizzled veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he was not prone to hyperbole or mistruths, so I believe every bit of his account.

He said he decided on the spur of the moment one weekend to drive to Dallas to see a Cowboys football game. He said he planned to buy a ticket from a scalper.

He said he got a hotel room, and the next morning he arose for an early breakfast and sat down next to a young family in the hotel dining room. They exchanged greetings, and the family asked my dad to join them.

He said the man identified himself as Everson Walls, cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys. He said they had quite a conversation -- knowing Dad he did most of the conversing -- and before they parted, Walls gave him a ticket to the game in the family section and a pass into family parking.
Dad was, of course, a diehard Everson Walls fan from then on.

Dad didn't come home gloating about his good fortune. He told me the story some years later. He was that way about war stories and his childhood, too. I think a lot of men who come home from war are that way.

Anyway, neither my dad nor I were surprised as years went by to read stories about the benevolent nature of Everson Walls.
