I was in the first grade and not yet Catholic when a Polish cardinal stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
John Paul II was the first and, well into adulthood, the only pope I had ever known, and indeed, the only pope I could ever imagine. To this day, when I hear the words “Holy Father,” his face is the one I instinctively picture, and probably always will.
I was expecting this week to see a new pope who would become that mental image for my son, who was born too late to know John Paul and is still too young to have lasting memories of Benedict XVI.
But whatever else Francis I turns out to be, he will not be a pope to grow up with. At 76, he can’t expect a long papacy.
And perhaps it’s just as well. Popes, after all, do come and go.
I want my son to know that the important things about the church are the things that don’t change.
