Full-sized Dairy Queen coming to Broken Arrow

Mini Blizzards were launched in 2010 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of Dairy Queen's signature treats.

A full-sized Dairy Queen Grill & Chill restaurant is "coming soon" to Broken Arrow, according to DQ's corporate website.

A small Dairy Queen/Orange Julius stand is located in Woodland Hills Mall, but it has been some years since the Tulsa area has had a full-sized, stand-alone DQ restaurant.

The new Dairy Queen will be located at 3120 W. Kenosha St., the former site of Broken Egg next to Ted's Cafe Escondido. In Tulsa terms, that's on 71st Street just east of 129th East Avenue.

The DQ Grill & Chill restaurants feature a full range of food items, including chicken strips, sandwiches, grilled sandwiches, wraps, burgers, hot dogs and salads.

Then there are the familiar treats that many recall fondly from childhood visits -- Dilly Bar, DQ Sandwich, Blizzard (soft-serve ice cream blended with candies, cookies or fruit), Buster Bar, hand-dipped chocolate cones and ice cream cakes for special occasions.

Other area Dairy Queens are located in Okmulgee and Wetumka, and a DQ Grill & Chill is located in Grove.

By the way, when you eat a chocolate dip cone, do you bite the top off then suck the ice cream through the hole you created, or do you lick where the ice cream meets the cone to try to keep the ice cream from melting over the edges?

I know one thing that always fried me: That's when a portion of the cold chocolate topping would slide off the ice cream onto the ground while I was taking a bite.

Concerning the dip cone, what amazes me is the lack of standardization among different DQs in the construction of the ice cream and chocolate coating. Some are very weak and thin looking, while others have a very hard, thick shell which helps the thing stay together and not immediately start melting. I usually start at the top until the chocolate shell cracks in certain places allowing the stream of white cream to pour down the sides, then the fight is on.

Fantastic, Can remember when about the only place to eat in Broken Arrow was the DQ on Kenosha(71st) just east of Elm Street on the south side of Kenosha next to the Otasco Store. It did a huge business back in the 60's and 70's.

Back in the day Tastee Freeze and Dairy Queen ruled. Throw in an A&Q Root Beer stand & it was all good :-)
