Gag me with a show

When I turn the channel momentarily to TMZ, which stands for train-wreck media zeros, or televised monkey zone, or something like that, my immediate thought is that the syndicated celebrity spying show is barfalicious.

It’s bad, and it’s bad for you.

Watching those pseudo-reporters in a faux news meeting, acting like cub reporters all giggly over their latest “get” (“We got Lindsay kissing Britney while Paris watched,” they might squeal, while smirking that slimeball, these-dopes-get-what-they-deserve smile of theirs), is both repulsive and informative.

TMZ’s prime objective seems to be in cementing public hatred for “the media,” while at the same sucking the life out of its fans, who would likely tell you that they too hate the media – but that they wouldn’t want to do without this program’s junk news/videos.

I have recently found the program valuable in one way. I will scan the commercials, because I want to know who supports this programming so that I can avoid their products.

So no more Oil of Olay for this 44-year-old man. Goodbye, Acuvue for sore eyes. Sears? I am so disappointed that Craftsman will no longer be a home improvement option.

In defense of Craftsman, I would be dollars to pesos that they didn't actually schedule their advertising during TMZ. It doesn't fit their demographic at all. Shows like TMZ typically receive such low ratings that they are used in "make-goods", when another show failed to reach projected rating points and the advertisers' contractual obligations still need to be fulfilled. I think you're safe to stick with quality Craftsman products.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
