Getting gelato case in Philcade Building was no easy chore

I was talking to Rusty Rowe, owner of Mod's Coffee & Crepes downtown, about a review I'm doing later this week about Mod's breakfast crepes, and its gelatos and sorbettos.

Mod's is just off the beautiful lobby of the Philcade Building, and Rowe said he had a heck of a time getting his gelato case, which holds 12 tubs of gelato, into the restaurant space when he moved in a year ago.

"It was one inch too big to get through the doors," he said. "Those door frames were built in 1931, and there was no way I was going to touch one of them.

"I was beginning to think I would have to break out a front window and then replace it, but before doing that I talked over the situation with a manager from Kanbar Properties, who owns the building.

"The Kanbar people were great. What they did was send over a couple of their engineers, and they took the case apart and then rebuilt it in exactly the space we wanted. I couldn't have done that myself."
