Going downtown

I ran into Craig Baxter, owner of Baxter's Interurban downtown, at a Drillers game the other day. He reported that the Friday night of the Miss Belvedere unearthing was the best Friday night ever for his restaurant.

I know some downtown businesses apparently benefited from the Tulsarama weekend, and some did not, but given Interurban's proximity to the Convention Center, it might be a sign that anything close to the new arena has a chance to prosper.

Locating a business near the new arena, however, is a puzzling matter at the moment. North and south of the arena are not options, and going west is going to take some guts, imagination and lots of money.

To the east, getting rid of a rat-infested boarding house went smoothly enough, but other properties might not crumble so easily. I hear that tearing down the relatively new and relatively nice-looking bus station seems to be a popular idea among developers, as well.

Whatever, we proceed with the notion that once the arena is built, the restaurants, nightclubs, shops, etc., will follow. Let's at least hope it all turns out better than the idea was to tear up our beautiful Main Mall and turn it back into a little-traveled street with a couple more tourist-magnet parking meters.

What year did the last Montgomery Ward or Sears or other big anchor department store leave downtown Tulsa? A much bigger question is... why did people quit shopping in downtown America?
