Uggie helps to accept the Golden Globe for "The Artist," which opens this Friday in Tulsa.
I was Twittering my time away on Sunday night during the Golden Globes, so if you watched the show, what I posted should still make sense a day later (see below).
Some day-later thoughts: The Golden Globes have never been a good precursor for the Academy Awards, and the point is this: People remember who won the Oscars, nobody including myself can recall who won most of the largest awards at the Golden Globes a year later, and they are often different.
Best picture still looks like "The Artist" vs. "The Descendants," with "The Help" still a player, but running third at best.
But at least that is three movies in play, and actors in multiple categories, too. In recent years, we've too often been dealing with either-or candidates by the time of the Oscars or slam-dunks like Natalie Portman and Colin Firth last year.
Best actor (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Jean Dujardin) and best actress (Michelle Williams, Meryl Streep, Viola Davis) and the supporting categories are all open to more than two possibilities. The Oscars should have some surprises.
As for the Golden Globes, these were some of my Sunday night Twitter thoughts, in order from first to last:
Ricky Gervais, off-color but not as "on".
Albert Brooks doesn't look happy. (after losing to Christopher Plummer)
Yes, "Downton Abbey" is that good. I have it recording right now.
Kelsey Grammer, winner as best actor in a TV drama...he and the Hollywood Foreign Press must be very close.
"The Artist" wins for best score. Somewhere, Kim Novak is weeping, or filling out a police report.
You got that right, Madonna, this is a surprise. So is the appearance of your left arm. Yikes. Audience reaction to her win: ice.
Seth Rogen joke (presenting with Kate Beckinsale): Was it too much? My wife says yes, I say "hahahaha."
Do the Golden Globes still feel like the party of the year if every winner is played off the stage after 45 seconds of a speech?
Which film this year got more mileage out of poop, "Bridesmaids" or "The Help"...discuss.
Morgan Freeman and Sidney Poitier, that is a lot of class up on that stage.
If Jean Dujardin's whole acceptance speech would have been his soft-shoe dance from "The Artist," that would have been divine. ("The Artist" opens Friday in Tulsa.)
Tonight is the night of women showing off her backs. That's a lot of back showing.
Where is the award for Uggie? That's one fabulous doggie! (helping to accept the best movie, musical or comedy award for "The Artist")
Clooney confirms that he's seen Fassbender's frontal nudity in "Shame" by his making that "you can golf w/o a club" joke.
