Indie-rock explosion
In this economy, some of the best music acts now opt for smaller, more intimate venues. And boy, are we grateful for three scrappy rooms that have stepped up to revive downtown nightlife with an array of concerts on the cheap (or better yet — free): Soundpony, Blank Slate and The Marquee. Located within blocks of each other, each has carved out a niche, bringing in acts from blues legend Sam Bush to groundbreaking pop, rock and dance acts Ludo, O’Death, French Horn Rebellion and more.
Upcoming shows:
The Marquee, 222 N. Main Street: The Atticus Tour on Friday; The Eagles of Death Metal on Saturday; Barcelona on Wednesday.
Soundpony, 409 N. Main Street: Attractive and Popular with Ginsu Wives on Saturday (free show).
Blank Slate, 222 E. First Street: Limbeck on Thursday (free show); Shiny Toy Guns on Friday; Straight Lines, Cecada and The Doldrums triple CD release show on Saturday.
While you're out, visit the new kid on the block, Flytrap Music Hall, 514 E. Second St. Upcoming shows include David Allan Coe on Sunday, and Coolio with Tone Loc and Shock-G on Dec. 20.
