Pick out a charity today and give it some money.

Giving Tuesday , or #GivingTuesday for Twitter users, is an emerging trend of theme dates after Thanksgiving.

The idea is to take a breath after the shopping frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday and offer up a kindness in donating money or time.

After emptying our pockets on gifts, this takes us in a different, more charitable direction.

The idea came from the 92nd Street Y, a nonprofit community center in New York.

Some nonprofits are using this day to attract attention to their missions, and some retailers have chosen groups to help support.

The Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy has set a goal of $5,000 to be reached before midnight.

The institute advocates for public policies that help children including changes to improve the systems of child welfare, nutrition, health and education.

Woodland Hills Mall is participating in the national movement by encouraging shoppers to donate at its guest services booth to the American Red Cross and the Simon Youth Foundation.

The Simon Youth Foundation is a nonprofit based in Indianapolis, Ind., dedicated to providing educational opportunities to students at risk of dropping out of school.

The foundation offers Simon Youth Academies for flexible schedules and small class sizes and provides scholarships to high school students.

No matter what charity you prefer, take time to give a little back today.
