Dr. McSteamy may not have survived the season opener of "Grey’s Anatomy" but the actor who played him is very much alive and has landed in a starring role in a new TV series.

Eric Dane, who played Dr. Mark Sloan (aka McSteamy) for six seasons, has been tapped to star in TNT's action drama pilot "The Last Ship," set to be executive produced by action film director Michael Bay. "Without a Trace" creator Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane are writing the pilot, according to deadline.com.

The series, based on the William Brinkley novel, will center on the crew of a naval destroyer which, after a global catastrophe nearly destroys the Earth's population, is forced to confront a world where they may be among the only survivors.

Dane will star as Navy career officer and dedicated family man Capt. Tom Chandler.

Also in the cast of the pilot episode are Michaela McManus, Charles Parnell, Travis Van Winkle, Christina Elmore and Sam Spruell.
