Grill it to me, Baby (uh-huh, uh-huh)!

I'm almost always chicken.

But lately, I've been craving red meat. Maybe it's because we're FINALLY upon a three-day, Fourth of July weekend.

In case you'll be grilling (and potentially hoggin' up like me), here are some great grilling tips from Clint Howard, exercise physiologist and owner of Fitness Together locations at 9708 S. Riverside Drive and 12345 S. Memorial Drive in Bixby.

"Believe it or not, grilling is actually a very healthy way to cook meat," Clint wrote in his most recent email blast. "Of course, the type of meat you choose makes all the difference. Burgers and hot dogs are traditional barbecue meats, though definitely not the healthiest."

That said, he offered these healthier suggestions:
- Choose lean cuts of beef, pork or poultry.
- Marinade with low-fat dressing and sauces.
- Make hamburgers with extra-lean ground beef.
- Take the skin off chicken before grilling.
- Replace regular beef patties with ground turkey patties.
- Grill up salmon or other type of fish.
- If not a meat eater, grill veggie burgers.

Clint also has advice on side dishes. "This is where most people run into more trouble," he wrote. "Barbecue side dishes are typically filled with one thing: Fat. Creamy coleslaw and potato salads can hold as much as 15 grams of fat per serving." (But, Lawsy, love me some potato salad. Still ...)

Try the following:
- Make veggie kabobs, and grill them.
- Replace the regular mayo in your salads with low-fat or fat-free.
- Serve fresh salad with light vinaigrette.
- Try whole-grain macaroni for your pasta salad, and go light on the mayo.
- Grill up corn on the cob.
- Put out a veggie tray with low-fat dip.

"Remember, it's OK to splurge every once in a while and enjoy yourself," he said. "Just keep in mind that by taking a few of the above suggestions, you can enjoy great food without adding to your waistline."

Peace, love and grill marks ... xoxo

Living Wright

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
