An Austin-based think tank Global Language Monitor ranks the story of Michael Jackson's death at No. 2 on the internet for the biggest stories of the century, behind President Obama's election.

The story is at No. 9 on the "Mainstream Media Ranking."

The group analyzes and catalogues the latest trends in word usage and word choices, and their impact on the various aspects of culture, with a particular emphasis upon Global English.

GLM reports that in the 48 hours after his death, Jackson jumped to the No. 9 spot for the global print and electronic media. For Internet, blogs and social media, Jackson jumped to the No.2, only trailing the election of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States.

The results showed the growing disparity between the mainstream global media, and what is playing out for news on the Internet, and beyond, the group claims.

The citations for Michael Jackson in the Mainstream Media numbered in the thousands; his citations on the Internet, and beyond numbered in the millions.

Citations for the election of Barack Obama are five times greater than that of No. 2, Michael Jackson. In turn, the death of Michael Jackson is cited more than double than those for the beginning of the Iraq War in 2003.

Have that (4 years ago)
what skewed and utterly worthless rankings...

9/11 attacks should be number one. but instead they rank the war that resulted from it as more important. what an idiotic way of thinking.

The death of a child molester isn't important, and it isn't nearly as newsworthy as the 9/11 attacks were.

People watched the news 24/7 for weeks on end after the 9/11 attacks, airports shut down, lives were changed forever, our way of living changed, songs were written, people from all walks of life and all political backgrounds came together and for a period of time forgot about the differences and instead thought about what made us all the same.

Pearl Harbor and 9/11 rank as the single most important and life changing events in the past 100 years of American History.

This child molesters death will not be written about and studied in books. it will not be discussed at length by people with any sense of intelligence. It will not be anything more than a trivia question answer years from now. His death is insignificant in the overall grand picture.

How people place such value on individuals who are as weird and perverse as him is beyond my understanding.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
