On Tuesday, Broken Arrow musician JD McPherson's album "Signs & Signifiers" got its official major label American debut from Rounder Records.

The 35-year-old's gone global, winning fans as diverse as Bruce Springsteen and Nick Lowe to Tom Waits.

He's also prepping for two rare local concerts: a headlining slot May 19 at Tulsa International Mayfest and a co-headline slot with Broncho at the "Music For The Mother Road" concert June 13 at Cain's Ballroom.

McPherson follows his album release with a string of concerts from here to Germany, Norway, Netherlands and even the Lincoln Center in New York City. There's also a radio show planned with BBC2's popular Richard Hawley, a slot at the prestigious UK Great Escape Festival and live songs slated on to-be-announced national late-night programs, he said in a recent Tulsa World interview.

He's been in bands since he first started playing music at age 13, he said. The day jobs that helped support his weekend gigs have finally given way to a "real full-time job."

"It's the best job in the world. It's just the craziest thing ever," he said.

"Signs & Signifiers" was recorded in Chicago in the attic studio of Hi-Style Records and released independently in late 2010. It was picked up by Rounder and Decca (overseas) this year.

Honestly, I can't fully explain my passion for this album. It's filled with propulsive songwriting, heel-kicking passion and a dynamic sense of "here and now" that is also 100 percent panoptic. "Signs & Signifiers" is as modern as it is undeniably true to its all-American roots.
