"Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" grabs the top spot where there are few other options

“Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” Took the top spot this weekend with $19 million in estimated ticket sales. This is a pretty okay opening, given that it was a slow weekend altogether, and the fact that the release date had been pushed back almost a year, and that it was universally panned by critics, including our own . However, seeing as how it only cost about $50 million to make, this is a solid win for Paramount.
Universal had a slightly better win with “Mama” which was in the #2 spot, having made $12 million, but only cost $15 to produce.
The rest of the top ten is scattered with award contenders and Quentin Tarentino again as word of mouth spreads, as well as two other new releases: “Parker” and “Movie 43,” which both seem to have tanked.
One interesting note is that this is the first weekend since its opening that “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” has been knocked out of the top ten. I have a feeling that it will be back next week, though. I have a feeling people are going to flee this week’s newbies, and I don’t think next week’s releases of “Bullet to the Head” and “Warm Bodies” will make up for it. Also, having made almost $400 million in seven weeks is a pretty decent run.
Here is the Top Ten:
1 Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
2 Mama
3 Silver Linings Playbook
4 Zero Dark Thirty
5 Parker
6 Django Unchained
7 Movie 43
8 Gangster Squad
9 Broken City
10 Les Miserables (2012)
