Kevin Moody of Moody's Jewelry checks out a $1.5 million diamond bikini worn by model Cassandra Tan at the Moody's store at 68th and Memorial back in the summer of 2002. The bikini is bejeweled with more than 1,500 diamonds equivalent to more than 500 carats in weight.
I'm fairly certain anyone with a minimum of one of the typical five senses knows on which side my bread is heavily buttered.
Still, I appreciate the bikini, which celebrates its 64th birthday today. According to a little
photo slideshow on CNN.com, "a Frenchman named Louis Reard officially introduced the bikini on July 5, 1946. His idea was to fashion a garment, using as little fabric as possible, that could still be legally worn in public."
Based on conversations I've had with friends and readers, America's comfort with the bikini -- specifically, the comfort level of those who would actually be wearing them, not ogling them -- seems to have increased over the years. When I've vacationed in Mexico, you see women of all ages in bikinis. Granted, some folks may have been better flattered following a third glance in the mirror and/or a conversation with a painfully honest friend before leaving home. But I applaud the self-confidence that must come with wearing a bikini -- the ease of being in one's skin or, more bluntly, the screw-ya-if-you-don't-like-it mindset.
So blah, blah, blah, here are my three favorite bikinis of all time:
First of all, Halle Berry's homage to Ursula Andress in "Die Another Day":
And, of course, Miss Ursula herself as Honey Ryder in "Dr. No":
Peace, love and two pieces ... XOXO
