Haven't seen "Avatar" yet? You better hurry

Not only is this the final weekend to see "Avatar" in Imax, but local moviegoers may also find this week to be the last opportunity to see the record-breaking film in 3-D.
The film that singularly raised the technology bar more than any other picture since the 3-D movie craze came back into fashion has still been selling out frequently on weekends. It's also nominated for nine Oscars at the March 7 Academy Awards.
But "Alice in Wonderland" arrives in 3-D and on Imax on March 5, and Tim Burton's extravaganza starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter is expected to be a hit. Multiple local theaters (Starworld 20, RiverWalk, Owasso)have only one 3-D screen, so they'll open "Alice," leaving no room for "Avatar" after 10 weeks.
Cinemark Tulsa has the Imax theater as well as another 3-D screen, but they will have "Alice" on both March 5, as ads proclaiming "last two weeks" can be seen on the theater's Web site.
AMC Southroads 20 has multiple 3-D screens, but there is no confirmation yet that they will keep "Avatar" on one of them.
"Avatar" is only showing on one 2-D screen currently in the Tulsa area, in Broken Arrow. So the chance exists that by next Friday, the No. 1 money-making film in history might not be showing anywhere in Tulsa, and on the same weekend that it might win best picture at the Oscars.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
