Healthy food at the Tulsa State Fair: fact or fairy tale?

Seth Bevan of Tulsa adds water to corn being steamed over a grill at the Freddie's Roasted Corn booth during the Tulsa State Fair. JOHN CLANTON/Tulsa World
I only go to the fair because of the food.
Specifically, I only go to the fair because of my job. But I've always had fun whenever I've gone, and Thursday night with food writer Nicole Marshall Middleton was no exception.
We were there to try the new stuff, as well as classic fare -- from the fried watermelon and chocolate poppers (fried jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese, wrapped in bacon and dipped in chocolate) to the familiar, favorite stuff like corn dogs and fried pickles.
Being on Weight Watchers, I couldn't help but feel guilty with each bite -- which, I'm proud to say, was mostly just that: bites. Along for our tasty fair ride were Nicole's sister, Gina, as well as fellow reporter Sarah Plummer and photographer John Clanton. Typically, we'd order something and share it, which is an excellent tip to cut calories when you're at the fair.
But splitting menu items isn't your only health consolation on the Midway, as some vendors offer healthy snacks, from delicious roasted corn (skip the butter -- which takes some fortitude to say) to grilled chicken skewers. We even saw a Caesar chicken wrap -- just ask them to give you the Caesar on the side or hold it completely.
Thursday's sojourn to the fairgrounds was my first in quite a few years, though, so I'm sure I'm missing out on some tasty but waist-friendly things. What are your favorites, where are they and, if you recall, how much money?
Peace, love and chicken skewers ... XOXO

Living Wright
While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
