Today on Hero Spotlight, we switch over to the video game world to highlight a hero.
On the block this time: the outspoken demon hunter that delivers lines as fast as he can pull the trigger on his guns: Dante from the Devil May Cry series. The son of Sparda is a character that is as cool as he is fast and deadly. Blessed with incredible powers, this half-human half-demon hunts down evil for the fun of it and when it pays well. Dante’s first made his appearance on the PlayStation 2 and has become a fan favorite character since. However, as of this year, the Devil May Cry series has rebooted with Ninja Theory now developing. Dante has completely undergone a character change and is no longer the white-haired smack talker we were introduced to over a decade ago, so today, well focus on “Classic Dante”.
Classic Dante: The boastful demon hunterBorn of a human mother and demon father, Dante’s first bout against evil began chronologically during the events of Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening when he had to confront his twin brother, Vergil, who was trying to open a gateway to the demon world to gain more power from his father. Dante was much younger than when first introduced in the original Devil May Cry and was quite cocky in his abilities. His main interest was of course stopping his brother’s plans, but that didn’t stop him from having fun while doing it and would be caught doing outrageous things such as smack talking to enemies that towered over him, surfing on missiles fired at him and even using a motorcycle as a melee weapon while simultaneously riding it up a tower in a straight vertical direction.
By the time the events of Devil May Cry 4 take place, Dante is a seasoned veteran at demon hunting. He has retrieved his father’s iconic sword and even has partners in his hunting business. Dante at this point is an unstoppable beast of a half-demon; even other heroes that try to take him on pale in comparison to his prowess. And because of that, he is probably at his most cocky. When staring down the edge of giant weapons, Dante not only maintains his cool head, but also makes his opponents look like utter fools.
Weapons & SkillsDante is indeed a strong combatant, but he becomes even more so when he utilizes Devil Arms; weapons obtained from slain demons. His favorite weapon is his sword Rebellion; a broadsword that was bestowed to him by his father. Dante is so powerful; he can use the sizeable weapon with blinding speed and with one hand no less. His most iconic weapons are his pair of pistols named Ebony and Ivory. He can fire the two guns with great accuracy and simultaneously deliver a non-stop barrage of bullets. During his adventures he gains other weapons such as gauntlets and greaves that showcase his superior hand-to-hand skills and devastating long range weapons that can tear enemies apart.
But perhaps his greatest power is his Devil Trigger; a state where Dante fully utilizes his demon power that grants him increased speed, strength and regenerative health that make him nearly indestructible. When in this mode, any demon in his way is in for a world of pain.
Recommended Devil May Cry titlesNote: Please be aware that these games are all rated Mature and should not be played by young children.
Devil May Cry: The original of the series. Fun fact: Devil May Cry was almost Resident Evil 4. The game was going to be a huge departure from its survival horror roots and have more emphasis on “coolness”. However, Shinji Mikami felt the project was straying too far from the Resident Evil series and got the staff to make it its own IP. Best line: “I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with light.”
Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening: A prequel to the Devil May Cry series. This game focused on the beginnings of Dante’s fight with evil as he had to stop his twin brother Vergil’s nefarious plans. Note: the original version of this game is EXTREMELY hard and even veteran players of the series will have trouble. Broken controllers may ensue. Best line: “I’m absolutely crazy about it!”
Devil May Cry 4: Dante is not the lead character in this one, but you do get to play as him halfway through the game and he has only gotten more skilled. Not only that, you have to face him as a boss character and he can easily show any player why he is so good at what he does. Best line: “Come on babes. Let’s rock!”
