Now that Al Franken is officially a United States senator, the critics have ratcheted up their criticism. The common thread is that he is nothing more than a comedian, unworthy of such high office.

They need to amend that criticism a little by adding that he is a Democratic comedian. Being a funny man or entertainer seems in the critics minds to diminish his capacity to think.

I'll reserve judgment until I see some of his work in the Senate.

In the meantime, the Republicans who disdain an entertainer entering the hallowed hall of Congress need a short history lesson.

I don't recall Republicans complaining when Fred Grandy – Gopher on "The Love Boat" – was elected to Congress. I can't remember a great uproar when Sonny Bono – of Sonny and Cher fame – did the same. Both were Republicans.

And, dare I say it, I didn't hear any outrage when actor Ronald Reagan (The star of "Bedtime for Bonzo.") took office. Of course, Grandy's and Bono's tenures in Congress were rather lackluster. Reagan, on the other hand, became one of the country's most popular presidents.

I'm not saying that Franken is either Grandy or Reagan. But at least I'll give him the chance to prove it one way or another.
