Hominy restaurant, butcher shop uses 18-wheeler for dining room

Tulsa World outdoor writer Kelly Bostian sent along a restaurant find during the opening weekend of deer gun season, and it sounds like a "must review" place.

It is called Wild Country Meats, located on Oklahoma 20 as one enters the east side of Hominy.

Bostian said the butcher shop has a long history in Hominy, and a couple of months ago it added an 18-wheel stock trailer to the side of the existing building and turned it into a dining room.

"It's nice and clean inside and makes a unique atmosphere with the diamond aluminum flooring and stock trailer walls," Bostian said.

"With the adjacent meat market and guys lining up outside to check and drop off their deer carcasses in the parking lot, it's a pretty unique dining experience. Drop off your dead deer outside, dine on steak inside -- only in Oklahoma."

Bostian said diners may pick out a steak at the butcher counter and have it cooked, or order items off the menu, such as specialty burgers.

"Good chow, family service and the iced tea and coffee are free," he said.

Bostian said owner Chris Gabriel just returned from taking a trailer-load of items to hurricane victims in New York, and the butcher shop, in cooperation with a church, donates a sizable amount of deer to local people in need of food.

Restaurant hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
